What is XML?

XML stands for Extensible Markup Language. It is a text-based markup language used to represent structured data using elements, attributes and nested relationships.

XML is commonly used for configuration files, data exchange, application settings, APIs and document formats.

What is an XML Formatter?

An XML Formatter, also called an XML Beautifier, reorganizes XML code with consistent indentation and line breaks. This makes nested elements easier to read, inspect and maintain.

Why format XML?

  • Make nested XML structures easier to understand.
  • Improve readability when debugging XML documents.
  • Make configuration files easier to maintain.
  • Inspect XML returned by APIs and other systems.
  • Keep XML code consistently formatted.

XML Formatting vs XML Validation

Formatting changes the visual structure of XML by adding indentation and line breaks. Validation checks whether the XML document can be parsed as well-formed XML.

This tool performs XML parsing before formatting. If the browser detects an XML parsing error, the formatter displays an error instead of generating formatted output.

Does XML formatting change the data?

The purpose of formatting is to improve the presentation of the XML structure. The formatter preserves XML elements, attributes, text content, comments and CDATA sections while adding readable indentation and line breaks.

Is my XML uploaded to a server?

No. XML parsing and formatting are performed directly in your browser using the built-in DOMParser API. Your XML does not need to be uploaded to a backend server for formatting.

Input Limit

The XML input and formatted output fields support up to 100,000 characters. This limit helps keep the browser interface responsive when working with larger XML documents.
